Diabetes consists of two kinds, type 1 and type 2. Both of them affect the way the body manages blood sugar. Blood sugar, known as glucose, is the fuel for the body’s cells to produce energy. However, glucose requires insulin to enter the body’s cells.

In individuals with type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin because the immune system destroys cells that produce insulin. Without insulin, cells are unable to absorb the glucose needed to produce energy.

While in individuals with type 2 diabetes, the body is unable to use insulin immediately or experience insulin resistance. When the condition of type 2 diabetes in a person gets worse, the pancreas will produce less insulin.
